What is a good job match score?

A useful match score is a prioritisation signal, not a pass mark. Read it together with the reasons: the strongest opportunity is usually the one whose core work, seniority and practical constraints fit — even if a few secondary requirements do not.

Start with the reason, not the percentage

A single number compresses several questions: can you do the work, have you done comparable work, is the level realistic, and can you actually take the job in that location? The written explanation restores those distinctions.

Read the first reason and ask whether it describes the centre of the role. A strong overlap on the central responsibilities is more meaningful than a long list of minor tool names.

Classify each gap

Not all missing requirements deserve the same weight. A legal credential, language requirement or security clearance may be a hard gate. Familiarity with one adjacent tool may be teachable. A skill absent from the CV may simply need evidence.

  • Hard gate: you cannot satisfy it before the role starts
  • Experience gap: possible stretch, but needs a credible bridge
  • Tool gap: often learnable when the underlying method transfers
  • Evidence gap: you have it, but the CV does not currently prove it
  • Preference: useful to the employer, but not necessarily decisive

Use three decisions instead of yes or no

Apply when the core work and practical constraints line up. Research when one important uncertainty could change the decision — for example salary, visa support or whether an industry requirement is firm. Skip when a hard gate or fundamental role mismatch remains.

This keeps promising stretches alive without letting every vaguely related posting consume application time.

Turn the score into a better application

Use the matched evidence to decide which achievements belong near the top of the CV or cover note. Do not copy keywords without proof. Where a genuine gap remains, decide whether to address it directly, show adjacent experience or leave it alone.

Always check the original posting before applying. A match analysis cannot confirm that a source has not changed the requirements or closed the vacancy since it was collected.

Common questions

Should I apply to a partial match?

Often, if the missing items are preferences or learnable tools and the core responsibilities fit. A hard legal, location or credential gate deserves more weight.

Can I improve a score by adding keywords?

You can improve the evidence in your CV, but unsupported keyword stuffing does not create genuine fit. Add concrete work, scope and results you can defend.

Does a strong score guarantee an interview?

No. It cannot see the applicant pool, internal candidates or a hiring manager’s unstated priorities.
